Tibetan Calendar Thangka On the basis of Sri Kalachakra Tantra (wheel of Time Tantra) Tibetan calendar is made, translated from Sanskrit. Tibetan cosmology and chronological studies are included as the first chapter of high level Buddhistic teachings and external Kalachakra. Lunisolar is the official Tibetan calendar which harmonize solar and lunar factors. There are three different systems defining the New Year, The Tibetan New year known as Losar, The Kalachakra new year and The Elemental New Year. All these three systems are kept apart due to their own purpose. The Tibetan New year defines official time calculation, the Kalachakra and the Elemental New year are important for astrological calculations. The Tibetan calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, and various dates are considered especially auspicious or inauspicious for certain practices.
