Akshobhya (Medukpa) Buddha "Immovable One" (One of the Five Dhyani Buddhas) Origins: In at least one legend Akshobhya was a Bodhisattva that vowed to never give into anger or disgust towards anyone. He was very immovable when it came to keeping his vows. This is how he received his name meaning the "immovable one." It is said he pursued his enlightenment after an endlessly long amount of years. He finally obtained this enlightenment and along with it he obtained the Abhirati Paradise. Because of that, he is often used to meditate to when needing to overcome fear and hatred. Akshobya is one of the central Buddha's in the Vajrayana Buddhism. He is considered by some accounts the lord of the second tantra within the five Buddha families. Akshobhya is mentioned also in several Mahayana sutras, the Vimalakirti Nirdesa is the one in which he is most well known for. There are two main types of Akshobhya: - Buddha Appearance Akshobhya - Peaceful Appearance Akshobhya Occupying a central role in Vajrayana Buddhism, Akshobhya, by some accounts, is Lord of the 2nd of the Five Buddha Families of tantra and found throughout all 4 tantra classifications most notably in the anuttarayoga class. Akshobhya is also mentioned in several Mahayana sutras, the Vimalakirti Nirdesa being the most famous. It was in Abhirati, the pureland of Akshobhya, attainable only by 8th level bodhisattvas, where the famous Tibetan yogi Milarepa and the scholar Sakya Pandita are said to have obtained complete buddhahood. Akshobhya, meaning unshakeable, is one of many Buddhas found in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. He is described in the Mahayana Sutras of Northern Buddhism and in the Tantra literature. Although a relatively minor figure in the Sutras Akshobhya is of major importance in the Tantras occupying a central role in Vajrayana Buddhism at all levels. He is easily recognized in paintings by having a buddha-like form, blue body colour and the left hand supporting an upright vajra scepter. There are no other Buddhist figures that have this same iconographic appearance. Tantric depictions of Buddhas are commonly shown with jewel ornaments and a crown. Alike the other Dhyani Buddha Amitabha, Akshobhya also has his own Buddha-field in the East, called the Pure Land Abhirati ('The Ultimate Joy'). According to the “Sutra of the Buddha-land of Akshobhya”, many aeons ago a monk gave strong vows to practice and teach Dharma in the Eastern Land and not feel any anger or malice towards any sentient being until enlightenment. He proved to be unshakable in his determination and became Buddha Akshobhya. In the Akshobhya Sutra, the Buddha Shakyamuni himself extolled the patience of Akshobhya in actualizing his intention so powerfully that countless beings have been saved from the intense suffering of lower states of existence. Akshobhya is usually depicted in blue colour, symbolising the colour of clear water that reflects things as they are. Akshobhya symbolises a clear mirror-like wisdom, which can transform any anger and clean stiff feelings. No reflection in a mirror sticks to it, and none repels it. The mirror always stands imperturbable and immutable, just as we should, whether the circumstances are favourable or unfavourable to us. Akshobhya is doing earth-touching gesture (Bhumisparsha mudra) with the fingertips of his right hand. This gesture suggests confidence, deep-rootedness and determination. In his left, he holds Dorje on his lap. Buddha Akshobhya may be together with his consort Lochanā and usually is accompanied by two elephants. As an elephant places its foot upon the earth with unshakeable certainty, so the Buddha Akshobhya mind reflects everything.
